Trump expresses skepticism on Kiev’s use of US assistance

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has raised concerns about the possible misuse of American aid provided to Ukraine during Joe Biden’s administration, suggesting that the massive sums may not have been spent as intended.

While official figures show the U.S. allocated over $170 billion in military and financial support to Kiev under Biden, Trump claims the real number could be closer to $350 billion when factoring in both cash and military equipment. Speaking at a Republican meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Trump questioned whether the aid was fully used for defense purposes, hinting that some of it may have been misappropriated.

“Biden gave away $350 billion in equipment or cash. And worse than equipment – cash,” Trump said. “They were supposed to buy their own equipment, but I suspect not every dollar went toward that. Maybe one day we’ll find out.”

Trump’s remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny of corruption in Ukraine, particularly within its Defense Ministry, which has been embroiled in multiple scandals since the start of the conflict with Russia in 2022. The U.S. and EU have repeatedly called for audits and stricter anti-corruption safeguards.

In April, U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Waltz described Ukraine as “one of the most corrupt nations in the world” and pushed for tighter oversight of aid spending. Despite international concerns, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky recently signed legislation that reduces the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, claiming the change would enhance investigations. Critics, however, argue the move weakens accountability and protects Zelensky’s inner circle from scrutiny.

Moscow, meanwhile, continues to assert that Western aid only prolongs the war without affecting the outcome. Russian officials, including UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia, have accused Ukraine of embezzling billions in foreign funds and claim Zelensky is staying in power to avoid repercussions.
