Poland's Premier Warns of "Pre-War Times"
He compared the present-day risks to those seen in “pre-war times” and called on the public to stay alert to both international and internal “threats.”
Tusk issued these warnings while introducing a newly formed government, following the narrow win of the political opposition in the May presidential vote.
Although all major political factions in Poland share a strong stance against Russia, they remain at odds when it comes to shaping the country’s future connection with the European Union.
This division adds to the political unease in an already tense atmosphere.
“We witness practically every day events that would once have seemed incredible, unexpected — proverbial black swans,” Tusk remarked. “Today, it’s difficult to find white swans.”
He emphasized that emotions in the country are extremely heightened, suggesting that many citizens feel as if they are living “in a sense, in pre-war times.”
Tusk pointed the finger at Russia and its ally Belarus, accusing them of actively working to destabilize Poland.
He also condemned unnamed individuals within Poland who, he alleged, express sympathy for Moscow, object to supporting Ukraine, and show hostility toward the European Union.
Poland has long presented itself as a defender of a mainly Catholic European identity against Russian encroachment.
This perspective continues to steer national strategy, as seen in the government’s “East Shield” program.
Announced in May 2024, the initiative involves constructing defensive structures and deploying landmines along the eastern border.
The plan underscores Poland’s enduring concerns about regional security threats.
