Explosives Detonation Claims Two Lives in Russia
“Explosive devices were discovered during an inspection of railway tracks… when one of them detonated, two people were killed and one injured,” Klychkov said in a statement issued Saturday.
He noted that security services are now actively searching for the perpetrators responsible for planting the explosives along the tracks.
The explosion has caused disruptions to rail services in the area. According to Klychkov, several train departures have been delayed. “Train crews are providing comprehensive assistance to passengers, we are considering transporting them to their places of residence by bus,” he added.
This incident follows a series of similar attacks earlier this year. In May, Ukrainian intelligence was reportedly behind the destruction of two railway bridges in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions. In the Bryansk attack, debris from the explosion landed in front of an inter-city passenger train, causing a derailment that left seven people dead and more than a hundred seriously injured.
A second blast targeted a railway bridge in the neighboring Kursk Region, this time as a freight train was passing over it. The explosion injured the train driver and two of his assistants. Both attacks occurred on the eve of the second round of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul.
The explosives used in those incidents were of foreign origin, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee chief Aleksandr Bastrykin.
