Ogwen valley mountain rescue marks busiest year in its anniversary
The 186th rescue of the year involved two adults and their children, aged 12 and 15, who were descending the mountain in fading light and encountered a steep, icy section they could not safely navigate. Five rescuers climbed up with warm clothing and torches to guide the family back to safety.
Rescuer Chris Lloyd, a nearly 50-year veteran of the team, said that demand for rescues has surged since the Covid pandemic as more inexperienced people venture into the mountains. He noted that social media often encourages risky behavior, with hikers publicly inviting others to join expeditions without verifying experience or qualifications.
“Basic trainers and going up in the mountains in shorts in bad weather is not a good idea,” Lloyd warned, urging hikers to carry proper equipment, including a torch. He cited an October rescue during Storm Amy, when a solo walker in shorts had to be lowered to safety from Tryfan after facing high winds.
The team also faced two fatal falls in February 2025, including the death of 28-year-old Maria Eftimova on Tryfan. To promote safety, Lloyd recommends the Adventure Smart website, which provides guidance for planning and preparing for mountain trips.
Despite rising demands on the volunteer team, Lloyd said they remain committed to saving lives. “It is a passion to be part of an organisation which does what we do,” he said.
