UN Warns of Rapid Displacement of Women, Girls in South Sudan
The warning followed a five-day assessment mission to the country. Anna Mutavati said that since the beginning of the year, nearly 375,825 people have been forced from their homes, with women and girls making up about 60% of that total—roughly 223,641 individuals, averaging 104 per hour.
She noted that the majority of displacement has occurred in Jonglei State, where approximately 174,197 women and girls have been uprooted, as stated by reports.
Mutavati warned that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly, with women and girls facing heightened risks including violence, hunger, and collapsing access to health services.
“As the lean season begins, women and girls are already reporting eating wild plants to survive, with some going days without anything to eat,” she said.
The agency estimates that around 5 million women and girls in South Sudan require humanitarian assistance this year, including 2.5 million in need of services related to gender-based violence.
Mutavati also urged stronger political and institutional measures, calling for full implementation of the peace agreement and preservation of the 35% quota for women’s representation in government.
She further emphasized the need for continued support for women-led organizations and called for a “credible, inclusive and transparent electoral roadmap” ahead of the 2026 elections to ensure women’s “full, equal and meaningful participation,” according to reports.
