UN Reports Heavy Israeli Firing Incidents Near Lebanon Ceasefire Line

(MENAFN) The United Nations has reported a significant spike in military activity in southern Lebanon, recording 299 firing incidents originating from Israeli forces south of the Blue Line, described as one of the highest levels since the ceasefire began on April 17.

According to reports, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said during a press briefing that peacekeepers documented the large number of incidents on the previous day, emphasizing the scale of the escalation.

“yesterday, our peacekeepers reported 299 firing incidents originating from south of the Blue Line,” noting that the incident represents "one of the highest volumes since the cessation of hostilities."

He added that no rockets were observed traveling from north to south during the same period. However, UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL) did record a case in which Israeli forces intercepted a projectile.

UN personnel also reported ongoing exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, indicating continued tensions despite the ceasefire arrangement.

Dujarric reiterated calls for restraint from all parties involved and stressed the importance of respecting the ceasefire agreement.

"We continue to urge all sides to exercise restraint and uphold the agreed cessation of hostilities," he added.

According to reports, UNIFIL also continues to encounter operational difficulties, including restrictions attributed to Israeli forces. Dujarric said such conditions highlight the risks faced by peacekeepers on a daily basis.

He further drew attention to the worsening humanitarian situation in southern Lebanon, noting that continued military activity is severely affecting civilian life.

“continued demolitions, shelling and airstrikes continue to disrupt daily life for civilians, particularly in southern Lebanon.”
