Gaza's Last Oxygen Plant Nears Collapse, Ministry Warns
"The plant is the primary source of supplying patients with medical oxygen, especially those with chronic conditions, in addition to meeting the needs of health-related civil institutions," the ministry said in a statement.
The facility, which serves Gaza City and the broader northern territory, is buckling under relentless demand. The ministry cautioned that the plant could cease operations due to "repeated breakdowns caused by heavy workload and long operating hours," compounded by the near-total absence of alternatives under the Israeli blockade.
The consequences of a shutdown, the ministry stressed, would be immediate and potentially fatal. Such a scenario "threatens a disruption in medical oxygen supplies and exposes patients' lives to serious risks," it said, warning of an "imminent humanitarian disaster." The ministry issued an urgent appeal to relevant authorities and international institutions to intervene without delay, demanding the entry of new oxygen generation equipment and a guaranteed, uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen to health facilities across the territory.
The warning is the latest in a sustained series of alerts from health officials over Israel's repeated obstruction of medicines, medical supplies, and critical equipment — as well as spare parts needed to keep essential machinery operational across the enclave.
The crisis deepens against a backdrop of ceasefire violations. Despite a truce in place since October 10, 2025, Israel has failed to honor its obligations, including reopening crossings and permitting agreed quantities of food, medical aid, relief supplies, and shelter materials into Gaza. Ongoing shelling and gunfire since the ceasefire have killed 818 Palestinians and wounded 2,301 others, according to Health Ministry data.
The ceasefire followed more than two years of conflict that began October 8, 2023 — a war that has killed at least 72,600 Palestinians, injured over 172,400, and devastated roughly 90% of the territory's civilian infrastructure.
