He warned that such statements could seriously undermine the already fragile atmosphere of peace and stability on the island, arguing that they risk escalating tensions rather than easing them.
Üstel also pointed to what he described as contradictions in the Greek Cypriot leadership’s stance. “On the one hand, (Nikos) Christodoulides and his mindset speak of a new negotiation process; on the other hand, they ignore and disregard the Turkish Cypriot people. This contradictory attitude clearly reveals his real intention,” he said, as stated by reports.
He stressed that no military deployment or security-related action on the island can take place without the agreement and approval of the Turkish Cypriot side. Any such move carried out without consent, he added, would be considered “null and void under international law.”
Üstel further argued that no European Union member state has the authority to take decisions that overlook what he described as the sovereign rights and security concerns of the TRNC.
He also criticized remarks attributed to French President Emmanuel Macron, saying: “(French President Emmanuel) Macron’s arrogant remarks and attitude are also noteworthy. France, known for its colonial mentality in almost every country it enters, can offer the Greek Cypriots only great disappointment in”
