UN Rapporteur Says Israel Is Using Greece to Advance Regional Influence
(MENAFN) Francesca Albanese has stated that Israel is using Greece as part of broader regional strategic aims, making the remarks during a public event in Athens where she presented her book When the World Sleeps: Stories, Words and Wounds of Palestine.
According to reports, Albanese argued that perceptions within parts of Greece regarding its relationship with Israel are misguided, suggesting that the partnership is not solely based on Greek strategic choice.
“You think that you have chosen Israel as a in order to secure peace from your eternal enemy, I don't think so,” she said.
She further claimed that Israel is actively shaping alliances to advance what she described as regional influence.
“Israel has picked you. Israel has chosen you, and it's going to exploit your fears and your insecurity, because this is what Israel does to advance its regional hegemony.”
As stated by general accounts, Albanese also referenced findings from international judicial bodies, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, noting that Israel has faced allegations involving genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
She emphasized that states have legal responsibilities to avoid complicity in such actions and warned that continued military or commercial cooperation could have legal consequences.
“Apart from the moral injury, I mean, as a lawyer, I can tell you, this is unlawful and there should be accountability. So, those who continue to authorize transfers of weapons or goods from or Israel into Greece or from Greece to Israel should be held accountable,” she said.
Her remarks, as reported, come amid ongoing international debates over arms transfers and diplomatic alignments related to the conflict in Gaza.
