UN Pushes for Humanitarian Corridor in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) The United Nations has reported increasing international backing for the creation of a humanitarian corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, aimed at preventing a potential large-scale food crisis, according to statements delivered on Monday.

A UN spokesperson said that more countries are now supporting the idea of establishing a structured mechanism to ensure the safe and uninterrupted flow of essential goods, particularly food supplies, through the strategic waterway. The initiative is intended to reduce the risk of worsening food insecurity tied to ongoing regional disruptions.

The UN also provided an update on efforts led by Jorge Moreira da Silva, who heads the organization’s task force working on the issue. His mission, which was previously announced, has been postponed, though consultations are continuing in New York with relevant stakeholders to develop a workable framework for the proposed corridor.

According to the spokesperson, support for the initiative is expanding, with a growing number of states backing the establishment of such a mechanism to help avoid what was described as a potentially severe global food security crisis.

The UN also reiterated its broader position on maritime access in the region, emphasizing that the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened and that freedom of navigation must be restored. The organization stressed that unrestricted maritime passage is a long-established international norm that should be upheld.

Officials further highlighted that maintaining open sea lanes is essential for global trade stability, particularly for essential commodities moving through the area.
