UN Releases Nearly USD98M in Emergency Aid for Crisis-Hit Mozambique

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United Nations has approved close to $98 million in emergency funding aimed at assisting communities in Mozambique affected by both armed conflict and climate-related disasters.

The support is intended to address urgent humanitarian needs, including food assistance for families who have lost crops and income, access to safe drinking water in areas where flooding has contaminated supplies, and healthcare services for populations cut off from essential facilities.

A UN humanitarian official explained the scope of the crisis and the purpose of the funding, stating:

"This funding will help address urgent community needs, including food for families who have lost their crops and income, safe drinking water for communities where water sources have been flooded or contaminated, and health care for people cut off from basic services,"

Mozambique is currently dealing with multiple overlapping crises. In the northern Cabo Delgado region, ongoing conflict has displaced thousands of people and disrupted local livelihoods. At the same time, severe weather events, including cyclones and flooding in central and southern areas, have destroyed homes, damaged infrastructure, and worsened access to clean water and essential services.

The funding will also be used to provide emergency shelter and basic relief items for displaced families. Protection efforts are expected to prioritize vulnerable groups, particularly women, children, and individuals at risk of violence.

The same official noted that the assistance forms part of a broader humanitarian plan for 2026, which aims to reach millions of people across the country but still faces a significant funding gap, requiring hundreds of millions of dollars to fully meet needs.

Overall, the allocation reflects ongoing international efforts to respond to Mozambique’s combined security and climate-related emergencies.
