Israel Admits 500 Strikes in Lebanon Despite Ongoing Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Israel's military confirmed Tuesday it has carried out approximately 500 strikes across Lebanese territory since a ceasefire was declared on April 17, while also acknowledging that five of its soldiers have been killed and 33 wounded by Hezbollah fire during the same period.

A broadcaster disclosed the casualty figures, noting they were released under what the broadcaster characterized as strict military censorship limiting the full scope of reported losses. "Five soldiers from the army and security forces were killed and 33 others injured since the ceasefire," the broadcaster said.

According to the broadcaster, three soldiers died in explosive-laden drone attacks and two were killed by improvised explosive devices. Among the wounded, 31 sustained injuries from explosive devices while two were hurt in direct confrontations with Hezbollah fighters.

Drone incursions by Hezbollah have emerged as an escalating security concern within Israel in recent weeks, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to label them a "major threat."

The broadcaster reported that Israeli airstrikes targeted roughly 500 locations across southern Lebanon, with a single additional strike recorded in the Bekaa Valley. "These figures demonstrate that there is no ceasefire in southern Lebanon," the broadcaster said.

The strikes continue despite the truce announced April 17 — subsequently extended through May 17 — with Israeli forces conducting daily bombardments and carrying out large-scale demolitions of homes across dozens of Lebanese villages.

Lebanon's Health Ministry announced Monday that 17 people were killed in the preceding 24-hour period alone, pushing the total death toll from Israeli military operations since March 2 to 2,696, with a further 8,264 people wounded.

Israeli forces currently occupy portions of southern Lebanon — some areas held for decades — while advancing an estimated 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory during the ongoing offensive, including zones seized during the 2023–2024 conflict.
